Metric vs Imperial system explained

The metric system, formally the International System of Units (SI), is built on powers of ten. A kilometer is 1,000 meters and a centimeter is one hundredth of a meter, so converting inside the system only means moving a decimal point. Most countries and nearly all scientific work use it.

The imperial and US customary systems grew out of older traditional units: 12 inches in a foot, 3 feet in a yard, 1,760 yards in a mile, and 16 ounces in a pound. They are still used in the United States for everyday measurements, and partly in the United Kingdom. Modern definitions tie these units to the metric system, for example 1 inch is exactly 2.54 centimeters.

Frequently asked questions

What is UnitCraft?

UnitCraft is a free universal online unit converter for length, weight and mass, temperature, area, volume and speed. It converts as you type, shows the exact formula, and runs 100% in your browser.

Is UnitCraft secure and private?

Yes. All conversions are calculated locally in your browser with JavaScript. The values you type are never sent to a server.

How to convert Celsius to Fahrenheit?

Multiply the Celsius value by 9/5 (1.8) and add 32. Formula: °F = °C × 9/5 + 32. For example, 20 °C × 1.8 + 32 = 68 °F. To go the other way, subtract 32 and multiply by 5/9.

Is this unit converter free and offline-ready?

Yes. UnitCraft is free, needs no sign-up, and all calculations run in your browser with JavaScript. Once the page has loaded, conversions do not need a server connection.

Metric vs Imperial system explained

The metric system (SI) is decimal-based, using meters, kilograms and liters. The imperial and US customary systems use feet, pounds and gallons and are mainly used in the United States and in some everyday contexts in the United Kingdom.

How accurate are the conversions?

Conversions use exact international definitions (for example 1 inch = 2.54 cm exactly) and results are shown with up to 10 significant digits.
